Fagor Splendid 10-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner

Fagor Splendid 10-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
Pressure cooking uses pressurized steam to cook healthy meals with beans, grains, meat, poultry, and seafood in much less time than many other cooking methods require. Made in Spain, this Splendid pressure cooker holds a maximum capacity of 10 quarts of Italian chicken soup or beans with sausage and works on all heat sources. The cooker is constructed of high-quality 18/10 stainless steel with an encapsulated aluminum base for even and efficient heat distribution. For safety, the pressure cooker has dual pressure settings on its handle--one in a dial control and another on a valve. Other safety measures include two pressure release valves and a locking handle to prevent the unit from opening while under pressure. A visual indicator lets you know when all the pressure has been released and the cooker is ready to open. This pressure cooker is dishwasher-safe and comes with an instruction manual and a recipe book. It carries a 10-year warranty. --Cristina VaamondeFrom the Manufacturer

Review 1:
This has been an amazing addition to my kitchen! I've used it for numerous stocks and stews, I've made beautiful batches of coq au vin, I've even used it for shortcutting the cooking required for molé. Everything's turned out wonderfully, and I always get plenty of complements from my wife and kids.

Everything about the unit is a joy. The heavy bottom is terrific when browning up meats and vegetables for cooking. The lid's latch is easy to work. The valve assembly comes apart quite easily for thorough cleaning, and I've even taken the lid assembly completely apart to get back into the various nooks and crannies.

This cooker gets frequent use around here and has always been up to the task. I love it!

Review 2:
Fagor makes fine pressure cookers, and this is no exception. I gave this to myself for Christmas, and have already used it several times, with excellent results. There is nothing difficult about this pressure cooker. Read the manual, and be sure you understand how to engage the pressure lock, and how to set the pressure valve for pressure. Watch the DVD that is included, and you're good to go. I will say one thing about the DVD: the demonstrators in the video say to start timing when the yellow pin pops up. This is not correct. The yellow pin indicates that there is SOME pressure, but it does not necessarily mean there is FULL pressure. You will know there is FULL pressure when there is a steady stream of steam emitting from the pressure valve on the handle. This is when you start cooking time, and also reduce burner heat to the lowest setting that will still keep stable pressure, with just a whisper or puff of steam at intervals of 10 or so seconds.

Review 3:
I bought this Jan. 04 and have used it quite a bit. At first I was nervous having never used a pressure cooker (we've all heard horror stories) but it cannot be opened while there is still pressure inside. With this cooker, I can take a 4 pound half frozen pot roast to table ready in 2 1/2 hours! I have also made soups and stews in it. You need to keep the liquid level lower so that it doesn't boil up and clog the steam vent. Not really a problem, you can add more water later for the same effect. You can also can in it, but it does not come with supplies for it, so I haven't tried it yet. Could I live with out it? Probably, but I have a feeling, the more I use it, the less I will think I can!

Review 4:
Since they live in Denver at altitude, I thought this would be a great addition to their newly renovated kitchen--with an induction cooktop. Daughter reported in January that it had been used every single day since unwrapping at Christmas. They are both involved in the high end restaurant business and intense foodies/cooks/gardeners. With work schedules, it isn't always possible to have long cooking times for food.
The larger size of this one was chosen in order to accomodate the possibility of cooking short ribs, lamb shanks, and larger pieces of meat. It has more than met expectations.
I wish that more product specifications would say whether it was induction cooking useable.

Review 5:
We have the 10 quart splendind model, and wanted to get one for my mom as a present because we like it so much. The first one arrived damaged (long handle on the pot was broken off), and now the second one arrived damaged (support handle on the pot was broken off). I have no complaints about the product, just the condition of the product upon arrival.

Review 6:
It's big enough for any meal especially when you have guests, cooks quickly and cleans easily. I've been cooking with it for some months now and I've had no problems with it. Overall a perfect pressure cooker.

Review 7:
I have experienced pressure cooking since I can remember. My mother and father use one all my life. The fear of exploding one of those ancient ones no more; Now today you can make beans in one hour, soften the toughest carcass etc.

I've owned one of the smaller ones this pot is awesome, high quality construction easy to use and the price can't be beat. The Spaniards know their pressure pots since they use one daily. A Latin home without a pressure pot unheard of.

Review 8:
I am thoroughly impressed with this pressure cooker. I read many of the reviews stating that it didn't have the trivet to can in. It doesn't. I have another I use strictly for canning. I bought this just for cooking. I use MANY whole foods in my meals this is the perfect way to cut cooking time and save energy. I am happy with all the safety features that Fagor has implemented. It is great.

Review 9:
I use this quite a bit. I bought it so I could can/bottle food from my garden but I have never used it for that. I usually use it for dinner when I didn't start it in time. I love it. It seems very safe. I have had it for about 3 years now. Still happy with it!

I do with I had a smaller one since most of the time I am using it I am making dinner for a family of 4 and I don't need it to be this big. It has come in handy for when I cook larger meals for other people or left overs.

Review 10:
I am very pleased with this pressure cooker by Fagor. It is made of high quality stainless steel. It cooks amazingly fast! Meats are moist and tender, roasted potatoes are ready in 3 minutes. A whole chicken was cooked in only 17 minutes. It reaches high pressure quickly. I highly recommend this cooker.

Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Pressure cookers are gaining momentum as the new healthy, time-saving, and energy-saving way to prepare food. While not a new method, the technology has certainly been transformed over the years to be easier and safer than ever. Constructed from 18/10 stainless steel for long-lasting durability, this 8-quart pressure cooker makes it possible to save up to 70 percent of the time and energy traditionally used in cooking rice, meat, and vegetables. The cooker's lid offers a long handle made of black heat-resistant plastic for comfortable use. A safety-lock handle, visual pressure indicator, and an automatic pressure-release setting ensure the lid won't come off unintentionally. For added convenience, the cooker provides a handy basket insert, complete with legs and a loop handle--great for draining pasta or steaming vegetables. Dishwasher-safe parts make cleanup a snap, and an instruction manual and recipe book come included. Designed for use on all heat sources, the pressure cooker measures approximately 17-1/5 by 11 by 10 inches and carries a 10-year warranty.

Product Description

Want to speed up your cooking time and save energy at the same time? With Fagor's Duo pressure cooker, you can do both. By using this pressure cooker to prepare anything from risotto to roasts to savory stews, you'll reduce your cooking time by one-third and your energy use by 70 percent! A pressure cooker is a wonderful resource for canning and simmering stocks, too. The spring-type mechanism in a dial format can be moved from one setting to another without changing valves: high (15 psi) and low (8 psi). Unlike pressure cookers of the past, you'll never experience noisy steam escaping or mushy food. Most important is that you can cook high-fiber, low-fat foods in record time while preserving essential vitamins and nutrients - and conserving energy, too! The 18/10 stainless surface won't interact with food. The duo pressure cooker has a triple-safety mechanism and pressure control valves plus two independent over-pressure release valves. The handle has a safety lock. The pressure cooker comes with a steamer basket, trivet and recipe book.

Customer Reviews

Review 1:
I use to own an electric pressure cooker, and after many scorched meals, decided to try a stove-top model. It was the best move I could have made! 18/10 stainless, surrounding aluminum on the bottom has kept every meal scorch-free. I feel completely safe using this pressure cooker. It locks easily, and the dial indicating if the pot is at pressure and if it is at high or low pressure is fool-proof. There is nothing complicated about using this pressure cooker. I just can't say enough about this pot. I have cooked professionally, and I have cooked for many years. I would not be exaggerating if I told you that this is the best-loved piece of cookware that I own. Fagor has produced an outstanding product.

Review 2:
I did a lot of research before buying this pressure cooker, but what sold me is that it was the America's Test Kitchen's top choice. I'm amazed at how fantastic this thing is! I used to have one of the old aluminum jiggle-top cookers...but the Fagor is in another class completely. It is quiet when cooking. It's very solid and cooks evenly. My only regret is that I didn't buy this years ago.

Review 3:
We've used this product for several months now and we're very happy with it....it works perfect. The product is very easy to use and is of high build quality.

Review 4:
This pressure cooker is a wonderful invention. I haven't used the steamer basket yet because I primarily bought it for cooking dried beans. Beans turn out superb in the cooker; with a little olive oil there's almost no need for any other flavorings and they're cooked in 1/4 to 1/2 the time it used to take me in a cast iron pot. Plus I don't even bother to pre-soak. Just throw them in dry. Incredibly easy to use and care for, I highly recommend getting this model. Cheers!

Review 5:
I had been delaying buying a pressure cooker because I was afraid it might hurt someone in my home. Then when I was seriously considering getting one for some cooking that specifically needed pressure, I chose Fagor for its stainless steel construct. For safety feature, I love that you could not unlock and open it unless pressure valve valve button is completely down (that ensures the pressures have equalized in and out). For cooking features, I love the thickness of the metal (heats evenly), the two pressure settings, and the easy pressure release setting. Now I wish I had bought the 5-piece combo that comes with a saucepan and a regular lid, because with the 8-qt pot I find it tiring on my arm if I had to sautee something first before pressure cooking, and the regular lid would have been perfect for when I add some tender veggies toward the end of cooking.

Review 6:
I've never used a pressure cooker before, but kept reading tempting recipes, so I bought this one (recommended by Cook's Illustrated). It seemed too big, but then I realized when you pressure cook, you only fill the pot half full, so it's perfect for cooking for our family of five. I love it!! We've had minestrone, hummus, potato salad, black beans, madras-style chickpeas, potato-leek soup... all cooked in less than a half hour. We're trying to eat less meat for environmental, financial, and health reasons, and this pot is the key to a quick bean-based dinner. It's very sturdy and easy to clean. The depth is nice when I'm sauteing (like onion) before pressure cooking. The basket is used for cooking things above the liquid. Two small negatives: 1) the basket handle can pull off if you yank it too fast when it's full, 2) the little wire thing used to keep the basket out of the water is a little tippy - they should make it wider. This is a nice pot, though; the aluminum (sealed in by stainless) in the bottom makes it saute beautifully. And the rubber seal+ locking system seems very efficient and safe.

Review 7:
I've cooked in other pressusre cookers for over 50 years, nothing compares to this for the ease in using. Vegetables and beans come out perfect. I'm a vegetarian so haven't cooked anything with meat. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get out of the kitchen faster, plus saves money on cooking fuel.

Review 8:
I ordered this pressure cooker and in just a few days, it arrived.
I like the absence of the old pressure jiggler on the lid and the stainless construction is very easy to clean.
When you have a mixture of vegetables, the largest must be cooked first and the softest (such as squash) added last for the least time to avoid creating mush. The steam release makes it very easy to interrupt and resume the cooking cycle.

Review 9:
I have been cooking for a long time and I don't know why I never tried a pressure cooker. I made a pot of chicken soup in 20 min. from start to finish. I could not tell that it had not cooked for hours, simmering on the stove. This Fagor cooker was really easy to use too.
My 76 yr. old mother came over for dinner and cooked with me and we made a roast complete with vegies in this pressure cooker and now my mom wants one for herself. She said she was afraid of pressure cookers before using this one.
I would highly recommend this pressure cooker. As a matter of fact, I am going to get the Fagor pressure canning set next.

Review 10:
I must be one of the lucky ones who actually received the product I ordered. I've been researching pressure cookers for a while and I've found this model to be top of the line of second level pressure cookers. The first line being Kuhn Rikon, WMF, Fissler and similar models. I've done mostly stocks, bolognese, and baked beans so far and have not had any difficulty. The aluminum disk at the bottom aids browning. Pressure cooking is safe if you know what you're doing so make sure you read the instruction manual and make sure you hit Miss Vickies website for recipes and additional safety information.

Amazon.com Review
Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 4-quart stainless steel pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional saucepan as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! This professional-quality stainless steel pressure cooker is a handy addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools. The heavy-duty lid locks down during cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. This pressure cooker is useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 65 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roasts--even desserts like 5-minute custards! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork; or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.
Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this stainless steel pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The Presto 4-quart pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 9 inches in diameter (16-1/2 inches including handles) and 6-1/2 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

Review 1:
I own three pressure cookers, I reach for this one the most. I use the bowl within the pot method to cook brown rice (I am too lazy to clean, this allows storage of the rice directly into the fridge.) After cooking brown rice in a pressure cooker, don't know how people have the time to wait around for a rice cooker. I like the audible rocking noise it makes, this way I know pressure is being maintained when I cook. I make mostly beans and brown rice, I cook for one and the bowl method allows me to have rice all week (using the 4qt Presto) I like this one best out of all three, because it seems not to clog like the others.

Review 2:
4 qt. stainless steel pressure cooker is great. I had a 6 qt I've used for years and years. The 4 qt presto cooks really quick. It seems faster than my old one. I highly recommend this product.

Review 3:
I couldn't believe it even cooks some traditional asian meal in less than 35 minutes (10 min heating + 15 minutes cooking + 10 minutes cooling) which normally takes me 2-3 hours and tastes so fantastic.

I never know pressure cooking could be so easy, quick and so much fun. I am experimenting with different recipes almost every day.

Definitely recommend to anyone who is thinking of trying it.

Review 4:
I have been using Presto Pressure Cookers for the past 35+ years, they are simply the best on the market, and I have had other brands, those other brands ended up at my yard sale, the Presto Pressure Cooker is the best! always reliable, and I have never had to replace the gasket, that is saying something to the quality of the product, which by the was has been on the market for longer than I have been alive, and thats a long long time, so why bother with the rest when you can have the best, and at a great price, give it a try, you will be delighted with all you can make and the time saved cooking this way, especially cheaper cuts of meat,I can't say enough good things about this pressure cooker!

Review 5:
We have used this for about 2 months and are perfectly satisfied with this pressure cooker. It is an ideal accessory in any home. It is big enough to cook meals for upto 6 people.

Review 6:
This cooker is excellent for steaming vegetables; cooking rice or lentils.
Cleanup is a snap and parts are widely available in most retail stores.

Review 7:
After using her old Presto for 25+ years, part of the pressure release mechanism broke. Thanks God!!! She had found a couple of Prestos on line, and asked me to order one for her. I asked if she had checked Amazon and she admitted that she hadn't. I told her to wait a minute and let me do a little checking. At Amazon I found the same pressure cooker for about $10 less, and it included Free Shipping. I ordered it on a Sunday and it was delivere by Wednesday. She really liked the looks of it, and when she tried it for the first time, she found out that she didn't need to cook things as long as with her "antique" Presto.
She showed it to her mother and five minutes later I was ordering another one for her. It's a pleasure to have TWO happy females around, especially when I get the credit!! Thanks Amazon for keeping your prices competitive, and that Free Shipping is GREAT!!

Review 8:
This is probably my 6th Presto Stainless Steel pressure cooker. I have given some to my adult children. It is the single most important cooking device in my kitchen (whole chicken in 30 mins, mashed potatoes in 20 mins, beef stew in 30 mins, corn on the cob in 15 mins, and the list goes on and on). Sometimes visitors see us using the pressure cooker and express concern about safety. But Presto designs them completely foolproof. There is no concern over it exploding, since it has an emergency pressure release (which in using these for over 30 years, has never happened). They are completely safe and SO incredibly useful. Once you get one, you will never do without it.

Review 9:
I have several larger pressure cookers, but there are just two of us now that the children are gone and married. This pan is perfect. Like the extra handle on the opposite side - easier for transporting from stove to sink. Would certainly recommend this.

Review 10:

This 4-quart cooker heats up and cools down much faster than it's 8-quart big brother. It's also easier to clean up because it's not so heavy. The bottom is very flat and it sits well on my glass top stove. The cooking rack is stainless steel too. I like my 25 year old cook book better because it has more recipes. Use a paper towel to wipe a thin layer of cooking oil on the top of the pan where it meets the gasket the first 2 or 3 times you cook with it. That will prolong the gasket life and make it easier to open and close the lid. Pressure cooking is the best fast food you'll ever eat. I looked at all the new style pressure cookers but the pressure regulators were all too complex which just invites problems. Simple is better. I've been cooking with Presto pressure cookers for 42 years. My first one was a hand-me-down from Grandma and I replaced it because it was aluminum. I still use my 40 year old 8-quart stainless cooker when we have a lot to cook.

Customer Reviews

Review 1:

This is a solid, basic stainless pressure cooker, that is quite a bargain at the $41.45 price (or $33 something after the $25 off $125 kitchen purchases).

Advantages:

* Easy to use flip pressure regulator for quick release of pressure
* Only has 15 lbs pressure that is adequate for normal pressure cooking
* Has handles on both sides that makes the cooker easy to carry and stable when full.
* Stainless won't interact with food product such as tomatoes.
* 8 qt. capacity gives 4 qts of capacity when cooking foaming products such as beans or lentils.
* Easier to clean than some pressure cookers I have used.

Disadvantages:

* Only cooks at 15 lbs of pressure, where some recipes call for only 10 lbs and would have to be adjusted.
* Most canning is done at 10 lbs pressure at sealevel and up to 1000 ft elevation
* I respectfully disagree that this cooker is meant for canning. It could process 3 or 4 pints in a pinch, but a 23 qt pressure cooker is the canning workhorse and will hold 19 pts or 7 qts. The manual suggests not canning in it, and it doesn't have a canning trivet included.
* It is much lighter weight than older Presto models, so I don't know if it will last as long as the old ones did.

Overall, it is a great pressure cooker for most cooking, and is a very good value.

Review 2:
I bought this for canning and found it more than worth the money. I never expected to use it for cooking but it came with great recipes so I tried it. Makes wondrous custards and delectable roasts as well. Forget the more expensive models - this one does a fabulous job of canning and spare parts are readily available (I blew out a pressure indicator - my fault). Highly recommend

Review 3:
Presto's 8 qt stainless pressure cooker is awesome; it's quiet, effective, and easy to clean. Its safety features do not interfere with regular use in any way. The short handles/grips are better than the short-grip + long-handle combination used on some models. This Presto just makes sense. It is my third one and is the best by far.

Though I only have experience with Presto, I cannot imagine another cooker being worth either the savings or the extra expense.

If you only want to own one pressure cooker, don't get the smaller sizes. When you want to do a big stew, chicken or roast you won't have room. A small secondary pressure cooker for extra vegetables etc. might be useful, but not as your primary cooker.

Hey Presto, A double-decker basket would be nice for separating certain foods. How about it?

*Never* buy the aluminum pressure cookers, they save you money but are forever spreading aluminum about when you clean them. Stainless steel rocks(heh heh).

As always, never risk letting a cooker run dry while cooking under pressure.

Review 4:
I use this Pressure Cooker at 6500ft. I found the adjustments that needed to be made at the Presto website:
Q. Are there any adjustments that need to be made when pressure cooking at high altitudes?
A. When pressure cooking at altitudes over 2000 feet, the cooking time should be increased. Increase cooking times 5% for every 1000 feet above 2000 feet. Increase cooking times as follows:
3000 ft: 5% 4000 ft: 10% 5000 ft: 15%
6000 ft: 20% 7000 ft: 25% 8000 ft: 30%

Review 5:
I knew that I wanted a Presto stainless steel pressure cooker because it has been so well rated. However, I struggled determining what size to get. Amazon sells the 4, 6, and 8 quart cooker. I am a single guy and thought that maybe the 8 quart was going to be too big but then did not want to get the 4 or 6 and be limited to what I could cook.

So I decided to get the 8 quart, and it turned out to be the perfect size. As you might be aware, for most foods, one should not fill the pot past the halfway mark. I like cooking chicken soup, chicken stew, turkey legs, beans, etc. Well, once I finish adding the meat, vegetables, and water, the pot is almost approaching the halfway mark. The size is also perfect for storing food in the fridge. When I am done cooking, I leave the leftovers in the pot and place the pot in the fridge. The next day, I can easily reheat the food right in the pot.

As for the pressure cooker itself, it works great. It cooks food fast and preserves all the food flavors. The pot is well made. The outer stainless steel surface is beautiful. Overall, this is just a great product.

Review 6:
Not sure what to say here... it's a pressure cooker.
Seriously it does what it's supposed to do.
It's the perfect size for my needs, it holds 4 - 1-pint jars without any problems, easy to close, easy to clean afterwards, that's about it.

I guess the key here is that should it break somewhere beyond it's 12 year guarantee I would buy another one exactly like it.

Review 7:
I had an old Presto 4 quart pressure cooker it worked well but this eight quart is great. One of the things I like about it is that I can safely release the pressure without moving the cooker to the sink. Trying to put the old one in the sink without burning myself or having the pressure valve release steam in my face was always concern. The double handles are wonderful for moving the cooker when it's hot. I use this cooker about 2-3 times a week. I do fresh veggies, stews, soup, stuffed peppers and potatoes all the time. It comes up to pressure quickly and maintains the pressure evenly in spite of my electric stove. I recommend it whole heartedly!

Review 8:
My son asked for a pressure cooker for Christmas last year, and after a lot of research, this is the one I bought. I highly recommend this item! My son uses it at least 4 times a week, and loves it! I also bought him a rice cooker and returned it as he says he doesn't need any other cooking device because this does it all!

Review 9:
I have used a Presto pressure cooker for years. Pressure cookers help to cook many foods quickly. Moving to a town where the altitude is about 3,500 feet, I discovered that beans were difficult to cook through without a pressure cooker. Also, because we had a new stove with a smooth top, we needed a larger pressure cooker to match the size of the heating element. Before I had an aluminium cooker. This is simply a great cooker at a great price for what you are getting. The release for the pressure is easy to use and safe. The bottom which is extra thick, prevents scotching. I think everybody should own a pressure cooker for flavor, speed, and it is the "green thing" to do as it uses less resources to accomplish the same end. Of the differing sizes, this is a great size to own. If you wish to cook rice, you will need to have a suitable bowl, but this cooker is large enough that a large stainless bowl will easily fit inside! I don't think you can go wrong with this finely made cookware. A warning is in order for those planning to use this pressure cooker for canning. It is not designed for canning at high altitudes.

Review 10:
Just completed teaching a class on how to use a pressure cooker, and I used this model to demonstrate. We steamed cauliflower, made a batch of black beans, perfect risotto, delicious chicken cacciatore, and topped off the meal with a batch of apple crisp. The recipes, more or less, came from the instruction manual (I always add more garlic where I can). The class was a big hit, and the pressure cooker was the star of the show.
First of all it is a lovely item. It's just beautiful to look at. It is sturdy, and has two handles which makes handling much easier. It nicely accommodates the 2 quart souffle dish I use to make desserts like the apple crisp. The capacity is perfect for making stews, you really need the 8 quart size to make a batch of stew or cacciatore or the like. The instructions are easy to understand and use, it's easy to clean (get some Bon Ami if you don't already have it. This baby sparkles after cleaning.), and it hasn't left my stovetop since I bought it.

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 6-quart stainless steel pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for.
The Presto 6-quart pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 9 inches in diameter (17 inches including handles) and 8-1/2 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

Customer Reviews

Review 1:
I bought this cooker 6 months ago from amazon for $35, and frankly, although the reviews I read on this product all said that it's great, I was very skeptical about the $35 price tag and was not expecting much. On top of that, both my mother and my mother-in-law warned me that cheap pressure cookers are dangerous, and I *must* buy something more expensive for safety reasons. I am just very glad that they were both wrong!

This is definitely one of the best purchases I have made on amazon. I still cannot believe they sell this for $35! The pot does not feel cheap at all. It has very sturdy handles, and a thick, heavy bottom, which holds in heat well. I like this pan so much that sometimes I use it instead of my skillet to sautee meat, because of the deeper pot + the cover, less cleaning up for me :-)

I love making soup and stock, but it usually takes up so much of my time when the stock is simmering. With this pressure cooker, I can make a meat-fall-off-the-bone soup in an hour!

Some might find this pot to be a little on the small side, but this pot works great for my wife and I. Although we have guests over regularly, I find the capacity of the pot to be very good. I would guess that this pot would work well for up to a 4-person family.

Pros:
=====
- Cheap, at $35, it's hard to beat
- Sturdy, I was afraid that the plastic handles would break easily, but they are in fact quite strong
- Stainless steel makes it great for browning meat pieces for stew or stock, and it heats up fast and holds heat well.
- Safe, you cannot open it when it's pressurized.
- Dish washer safe, though I prefer to wash it by hand.

Cons:
=====
- The handle can be tricky to hold with one hand. My hands are small, and when you've closed the top, the handle is kind of big. Luckily, I don't need to do this very often, and when I need to move it around, I just use both handles.
- The top cap can be tricky to clean. I usually soak it in hot soapy water, and then clean it thoroughly with Q-tip.

Watch outs:
===========
- The handle curves in a way that it catches any dripping liquid, I've hurt myself once when I wasn't careful at opening the cover.
- Do *NOT* remove the cap while it's blowing! The steam from inside is extremely hot and as soon as you remove the cap, the hot steam will shoot up faster than you can move your hand(s) away.

Tips:
=====
- I keep some water bottles in my freezer, and when I need to cool this off in a hurry, I can make a bath of cold water in my sink, put the hot pot inside, and throw the froze water bottles in. This usually cools it down very fast, great when I want to refrigerate it overnight to skim off the fat, and didn't want to wait too long for it to cool down.

Review 2:
This is nothing fancy, but it works wery well. Replacemenat parts are easy to buy. You can't open it if it's under pressure because it has a lock by the handle (safety feature). Actually I think it's very safe as it has other features as well.
I think one of the most important things to look for is what it's made of (after safety of course!). This is stainless steel which is good because you don't want aluminum (aluminum will stain and get eaten away with acidic food such as vinegar or lemon juice...).
Another thing to consider is that it takes time to heat up and cool down so even though all pressure cookers say it takes a lot less time to cook, they don't take the heat-up cool-down time into consideration, even though they are correct about the actual cooking time.

Good pressure cooker.

Review 3:
Get the Presto. They're all the same. It's a simple design, a pot and lid. I've been using them for 20 years and the expensive ones are no better than the Presto- Only an amateur cook would believe different. The Prestos cook just as good and just as fast as the Rikons. My kitchen is filled with the best and most expensive equipment money can buy, but when it comes to pressure cookers, it's not like other cookware where you "get what you pay for." They're all the same (although I don't recommend the electric ones as they have a tendency to break down). Save your money for the good espresso maker... don't waste it on expensive pressure cookers. Get the Presto.

Review 4:
I've owned 3 pressure cookers over the years, and all of them suffered from locking mechanisms that wouldn't actuate and let steam blast through until you shook the pots or pounded them with spoons to get them to actuate. But this cooker has a responsive mechanism that vents the air out and then actuates reliably as soon as the pressure begins to build up.

Beyond that, it's well-built, with a thick bottom to distribute heat and resist heat distortion. I expect this cooker to last longer than I will.

If you're uncertain about whether you should own a pressure cooker, here's my opinion: pressure cooking is the best way to cook vegetables, including potatoes, and the best way to cook rice, beans, or rice-and-beans. It's good for cooking hamburger for meat sauce, because there's no smoke and the grease drips into the cooker where it's easy to clean as long as the cooker is warm. There are some cool things you can do with chicken and it's an easy way to make puddings. I prefer the cooker for heating leftovers because they come out as if they're freshly cooked instead of dry and unevenly heated like you get from microwaves.

Thank you, Presto!

Review 5:
Oh,how I wish I hadn't waited so long to try Pressure Cooking! My mother instilled so much fear in me about using a pressure cooker that I didn't even want to try it until a friend finally convinced me. Now I'd absolutely hate to be without this fast and safe way to cook.

My first experiment was a recipe for Chicken Cacciatore. Three pounds of chicken cooked for 10 minutes (at 6000' altitude) and was fork-tender and delicious. My next endeavor was a ham and bean soup, which cooked for 35 minutes without having to presoak the beans, and it turned out perfectly. Beans were completely cooked but not mushy. Next came a pot roast with potatoes, which cooked for 45 minutes starting partially frozen, and was perfect. Then tried a chicken with plum sauce--again a nine-minute success. Most recently we tried pasta with meat sauce, which was a delicious one-pot meal ready in 7 minutes cooking time.

I love this Presto model cooker, because it has all the safety features, but still allows careful monitoring of the"jiggle top", and allows me to judge how fast the dish is cooking. This is a heavy and well-built unit. The safety precautions are easy, and are fully described in the accompanying manual.

I also recommmend Lorna Sass' book "Pressure Perfect", for beginners. This book is a well-written primer on pressure cooking, with recipes that are reliable and carefully written. The recipes have a degree of creativity, but are all things that "real people" eat.

Happy cooking!

Review 6:
This is a great addition to the kitchen. If I'd known it was so easy to use, I would have gotten one years ago. The instruction manual is good, and the ladies at Presto are good to explain what "rocking slowly" looks like. I made mashed potatoes and green beans the first night. Best ever; tasted garden fresh. The potatoes weren't all mushy from having to boil them -- really turned out fluffy. Did a roast and gravy with mixed veggies the next night (did the roast first and let it sit while I pressured the veggies for four minutes). This pressure cooker is going to keep my kitchen cool this summer. I'm very pleased with it. Can't wait to try pinto beans. . . . . . . . UPDATE: The pintos turned out great. No gas.

Review 7:
I looked for weeks for a new pressure cooker. I had the Inova model but it eventually wore out after 15 years. I shopped locally and looked on-line. The best prices I could find were between $49.00 and $75.00 for the size I wanted.
I found the best price on Amazon. It works great, looks good and is heavy duty. The thick plated bottom is excellent for browning and high sides prevent splatter if you want to saute before cooking. I highly recommend this model for anyone who wants to experiment with pressure cooking or needs a quality replacement. Cooking with 1/3 the energy use of other appliances--this is truly a "green" machine!

Review 8:
I have been using pressure cookers for many years. Instead of replacing the worn out gasket--again--on my thirty-year-old Mirro 6 qt. heavy aluminum pressure cooker I decided to buy a new one. I chose this Presto and it's great. Much lighter and easier to handle. And it's easy to clean up and restore it to its original shine! It seems the cooking times are faster than my old one, too.

Review 9:
I have owned a pressure cooker ALLL My married life... 43 yrs...I still have my mother's... over 60 yrs old.. and I use it...I am excited about the new pressure cooker... it is more efficient than my relic.. I can't imagine making beef stew, chicken soup, pot roast... spagetti sauce! without it!! I can plan my meals at the last minute and have dinner on the table within an hour... sometime half hour. If I were on a deserted island and could only have ONE pot... it would be my pressure cooker... you can fry without the lid... and cook with or without the pressure...
